Problem

Onboarding users to a new experience is always a challenge. User onboarding is the process of improving a user's success when using a product or service. The goal of onboarding is to help users understand the product and show them how to use it. User onboarding is intended to create a lasting impression of the product on the user, exposing the value of repeated user of the product and illustrating "why" the user needs to make use of the product as a regular part of their interactive habits.

This is a concept I designed for onboarding users to a new mobile app for Esri's platform. The onboarding experience in the app is a tailored experience with hyper-local open data and community-specific initiatives, designed to engage citizens and foster greater sense of community through shared, common knowledge and explorable data.

Solution

For this project, the design was bolstered by research and informed by the following goals:

  • Inform potential users of the Hub's value by clearly stating the value proposition

  • Provide a tutorial in the form of a brief overview that outlines the core features and functionality, as they relate to the value proposition of the product

  • Provide users with the option to sign up or sign in, either through account creation or social media integration

  • Persuade the user to provide additional details to complete their account, which will yield a customized in-app experience, tailoring content based on their personality and preferences
